Tevel is getting on track
Getting ready to launch the Red Line Tevel, which is responsible for operating the Red Line, is getting ready to meet the launch date successfully and provide optimal operational services, by focusing on the following:
Manpower
Tevel is recruiting 300 professionals who will be qualified for working in the LRT system. Recruitment is gradual, aligned with project development.
Training and certification
Engine operators and operation engineers must be certified as prescribed by the Railways Ordinance. Tevel is therefore managing an extensive training program taking place in Israel and overseas, along with its Chinese partners. Engine drivers and engineers, as well as other professionals, receive special training in China, from the partner companies and engine manufacturer.
A bus on rails
In preparation to operate the line, a special bus line was established, traveling on the LRT path. The purpose of the bus line is to accustom people to the LRT route, as well as to learn about traffic and transit of the street-level track.
Absorb the cars and ready them for operation
The cars were acquired by NTA, who transports them to Tevel upon their arrival, where they are prepared for use. Getting the cars ready for operation includes a break in period which is set to start very soon.
How to break in the railcars?
At the end of the track there is an enormous depot where the cars will be parked. A half mile track is currently being adapted at the depot, intended for breaking in the cars. Upon arrival of the cars, they will run over an accumulated distance of 125 miles, during which the drivers will be trained, and the engines tested.
Formulating a traffic plan
Integrating the LRT at street level will dramatically affect vehicle and pedestrian traffic in its wake. Therefore, Tevel is formulating an updated traffic plan to include: changing priorities at intersections, traffic lights control, pedestrian traffic plans and more.
Establishing a network of feeder lines
Tevel is also focusing its efforts on building an extensive plan for bus operators on the line's path, to create a network of feeder bus lines to allow the efficient and convenient integration of the LRT with other mass transit services.
Teaching the masses
Finally, all road users will face a new reality. Tevel is formulating an inclusive public education program, for pedestrians, mass transit users and drivers, designed to help everyone reach their destination safely, whether by bus, on foot, by rail or private car.
Emergency readiness
The Red Line track underground will be used as a huge public shelter in time of emergency, capable of absorbing tens of thousands of people. Tevel is also preparing emergency action plans, collaborating with city councils, the IDF, the police department and the emergency services.
